Havana Revisited - recent photographs from the same viewpoint as old postcards

If you like old Cuban postcards, history and architecture, you are in for a real treat.

A new coffee table book titled Havana Revisited: An Architectural Heritage, by Cathryn Griffith, will be released next month.

It features more than 350 colored postcard images of Havana next to a recent color photograph of the same subject from the same viewpoint giving the reader a perfect comparison of old Havana and today’s Havana.

The result is stunning imagery based on years of research and preparation encompassing Cathryn GriffithРІР‚в„ўs collection of more than 600 postcards of Havana from 1900 to 1930. She took over 3,000 photographs during multiple trips to Havana starting April 2003.

The book features a forward by Eusebio Leal Spengler, the Havana city historian and documents the history, preservation, and present uses of HavanaРІР‚в„ўs most important buildings and urban spaces.

About Cathryn Griffith

Cathryn Griffith, a graduate of Wellesley College and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, lives in Boston, Massachusetts, where she develops and manages industrial real estate. Since her first journey to Havana in 2003, she has made more than a dozen working trips there to photograph, in the process acquiring a broad range of contacts with outstanding scholars and historians in both Cuba and the United States. Her collection of historic postcards forms the inspiration for this book.

A student of French culture and language, Griffith has written and lectured about the Musée d’Orsay and has also photographed in France, China, Tibet, along the Silk Road, and in New England. Raised near Erie, Pennsylvania, on land that had been planted by her great-grandparents, she has seen the houses of her family and forebears demolished and gained a deep respect for the history embodied in architecture.
